Anxiety can affect every part of life. It may show up as racing thoughts, poor sleep, tension, digestive changes, panic, low
confidence, hormonal changes, or a constant feeling of being unable to switch off.
If you are looking for acupuncture for anxiety in Pembroke, Pembroke Dock or the surrounding areas, I offer a warm, welcoming and non-judgemental space where you can feel safe, heard and supported.
My aim is to provide an affordable and calming place where you can relax, unwind and take time for yourself.
Whether anxiety is something new, something that comes and goes, or something you have lived with for a long time, your first appointment is a chance for us to gently explore what is going on and how acupuncture may be able to support you.
A warm, safe and non-judgemental space
Many people feel nervous before their first acupuncture appointment. This is completely normal, especially if you are not sure what to expect or feel apprehensive about needles.
My approach is gentle, supportive and unhurried. There is no judgement, no pressure and no expectation that you need to explain everything perfectly.
You are welcome exactly as you are.
The treatment room is a space where you can pause, breathe and begin to feel more settled. From experience, the nervousness people feel before their first appointment is usually short lived.
Once we have talked things through and you understand what will happen, most people begin to relax.
What happens at your first acupuncture ?
Your first appointment is where we meet and take time to get to know you and your healthcare needs.
This appointment is not rushed. I will ask about your symptoms, but we will also look at how they affect your day-to-day life. Anxiety is different for everyone, so it is important to understand what it feels like for you personally.
We may talk about:
-when your symptoms first started
-how anxiety affects your daily life
-your sleep and energy
-mood and emotional wellbeing
-digestion and appetite
-tension, headaches or pain
-menstrual cycle, hormones or menopause symptoms
-stress levels
-lifestyle and routines
-relationships and support
-nutrition and general health history
This helps me build a fuller picture of what may be contributing to how you feel.
Looking at the whole person, not just the symptoms.
One of the things that make this approach different is that I do not just focus on anxiety as a single symptom. I take time to understand the person behind the symptoms.
For example, two people may both come for anxiety, but their experiences may be completely different.
One person may feel constantly tense and unable to switch off.
Another may feel exhausted, emotional and overwhelmed.
Someone else may notice anxiety mainly in their stomach, breathing, sleep, hormones or confidence.
By exploring your symptoms, lifestyle, relationships, nutrition, stress levels and emotional wellbeing, I can create a treatment approach that is more personal to you.
How does acupuncture work for anxiety?
Acupuncture is often described as helping the body move out of “fight or flight” mode and into a calmer, more regulated state.
When we feel anxious or stressed, the nervous system can become overactive. This may lead to symptoms such as:
-racing thoughts
-tight chest
-shallow breathing
-poor sleep
-digestive changes
-muscle tension
-feeling tearful or overwhelmed
-difficulty switching off
-changes in hormones or menstrual cycle
Acupuncture aims to support the body’s natural ability to regulate itself. Many people find that treatment helps them feel calmer, more grounded and less tense.
Acupuncture and the nervous system
Anxiety can keep the body on high alert. This is linked with the sympathetic nervous system, which is involved in the stress response.
Acupuncture may help encourage the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes known as the “rest and digest” state.
This is the state where breathing can slow, muscles may soften, digestion can settle and the mind may feel quieter.
This is one reason people often feel deeply relaxed during or after acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture, stress hormones and cortisol
When stress continues for a long time, the body can remain in a heightened state. Stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline are useful in short bursts, but when the stress response is constantly activated, it can affect sleep, mood, digestion, energy and hormonal balance.
Many people describe feeling “wired but tired” - exhausted, but unable to properly switch off.
Acupuncture may help support the body’s stress response, encouraging a calmer and more balanced state.
The aim is to help the body feel safer, less reactive and more able to rest.
Acupuncture and hormones
Anxiety and hormones are closely connected. Many people notice anxiety becomes worse around certain times, such as:
-before a period
-during perimenopause
-during menopause
-after having a baby
-during fertility challenges
-during periods of poor sleep or high stress
Hormonal changes can make anxiety feel more intense, and ongoing stress can also affect hormonal balance.
In Chinese medicine, we look at the whole picture. This may include your cycle, sleep, digestion, energy, emotions, lifestyle, stress levels and general wellbeing.
This helps create a treatment plan that is individual to you.
Acupuncture may be used to support hormonal wellbeing by helping the body relax, improving sleep, easing tension and supporting overall balance.
How soon will I feel results from acupuncture for anxiety?
Everyone responds differently to acupuncture.
Some people feel calmer after their first treatment. They may sleep better that night, feel more relaxed, or notice that their anxiety feels a little less intense.
For others, changes are more gradual and build over a few sessions.
This is especially true if anxiety has been present for months or years, or if there are other factors involved such as hormonal changes, chronic stress, grief, trauma, burnout or poor sleep.
As a general guide:
Recent or mild anxiety: you may notice changes within 1–3 treatments
Ongoing stress or anxiety: a course of 4–6 treatments may be helpful
Long-term anxiety, hormonal issues or complex health concerns: regular treatment over a longer period may be more supportive
At your first appointment, we will discuss what feels realistic for you.
I will not pressure you into more treatment than you feel comfortable with. We will review how you are responding and adapt your treatment plan as needed.
What if I am nervous about acupuncture needles?
It is very common to feel nervous about needles, especially if you have never had acupuncture before.
Acupuncture needles are very fine, and treatment is usually much gentler than people expect.
I will explain everything before we begin, and we can go at your pace.
You are always in control.
If you feel apprehensive, please tell me. I am used to supporting people who feel anxious, sensitive or unsure, and I will do everything I can to help you feel comfortable.
Creating your treatment plan
After listening to your answers and making my own observations, I will form a Chinese medicine diagnosis. This helps guide your acupuncture treatment and allows me to choose points that are appropriate for your individual needs.
We will then create a treatment plan together. I will explain what I feel may be helpful, how often treatments may be recommended, and how many sessions you may need.
The plan will always be discussed with you, and it can be adapted depending on how you respond.
Can acupuncture cure anxiety?
Acupuncture is not a magic cure, and it is not a replacement for urgent mental health care, counselling, medication or support from your GP where these are needed.
However, many people choose acupuncture alongside other forms of support to help manage anxiety, stress and emotional overwhelm.
If your anxiety is severe, worsening, or you are struggling to cope, it is important to speak with your GP or a mental health professional.
Acupuncture can often sit alongside conventional care as part of a wider support plan.
